Loei is very good centre, (with comfortable hotels), for visiting many interesting places such as Phupamarn and Khunming national parks, as well as Phu Rua for the Flower Festival at the end of December.
In the Thai language there is a phrase "Pai Loei" meaning keep going all the way. I am told that it comes from the days when elephant caravans travelled from Bangkok to Laos and beyond. To avoid the wetlands the caravans would travel around the mountainous regions to reach Loei which was as far North as you could go in Isaans. Hence "Pai Loei" ..... "Go to Loei". I learnt the phrase from a traffic policeman who used it to explain that I should not have done a U-Turn in a particular road. Expensive tuition!
