About an hour's drive from Khon Kaen is the freshwater lake and beach resort at Ubonrat Dam.
For less than UKP1.00 you can hire a thatched beach hut built out into the water on stilts, and there is covered car parking too.
There is no need to take a box of sandwiches - wonderful food is available from the hut owners at very good prices.
For instance a KILO of huge fresh prawns barbecued to perfection will cost you the equivalent of UKP3.00.
For the younger - or larger groups - a floating disco can be hired that will hold around 30 to 40 people - complete with a DJ with a BIG sound system, and naturally a very commendable bar. (or so I am told!).
