Savannakhet in Laos an alternative border crossing to Nong Khye. A bridge similar to the Friendship Bridge in Nong Khye is almost complete (Oct. 2006) and should be open by December 2006.
Not far from the ferry pier is a relaxing park, with the inevitable (for this region) dinosaur rest area. They have real animals also - including a couple of crocodiles in a very secure enclosure, and the deer shown in the photo.
The statue at the head of the page is of the builder of the modern Savannakhet - but be very, very wary of taking photos. An extremely bad tempered Lao lady came and shouted at me because I took a photo. Pride in the "founder" of her City should have controlled her emotions, but sadly it was not so.
